Beginning of the third week

I returned today from a visit home over the weekend.  God has blessed me with a great family; I very much enjoyed spending time with them.  Among the highlights of the week were an early celebration of my brother's birthday, a bike ride to a local coffee shop with my brother, and some good conversations with my sisters.  I came back to Iowa armed with some great recipes from Mom, and some wise advice from Dad.

I am enjoying my classes thus far. My favorite class at the moment is Dental Anatomy.  Most of the class consists of learning to sculpt teeth out of wax.  It is a good challenge; I have spent between seven and eight hours working on an upper left central incisor, and it still isn't quite right (the angles on the sides, where they come down to meet the gums, aren't quite correct yet).

I have met several other professing Christians in the class, and we plan to start a Bible study on Colossians during lunch breaks, either weekly or biweekly.  Two of us plan to alternate leading it this semester.  We then hope to expand the leadership next semester.  I would appreciate prayer for wisdom as we set  it up.

  2. I'm very glad that you could come home this weekend. :)

It would be fun to see a picture of your wax tooth sometime. Hope your week goes well!

  3. Hey, there! I hope you continue to post regularly, I always enjoy reading what you have to say.

Isn't Josh a little young for coffee? lol I'm glad you had such a grand weekend.

I agree with your Mom, a picture of your Dental Ananomy project would be very interesting. What other classes do you have?

It is good to hear you are making friends. Have an excellent week. :)

  4. Hello! It's great to hear from you!

I suppose he is a little young for coffee, but it was mixed with caramel, mint flavoring, and milk, so its effect was probably diluted.

I'll try and post a picture soon. I am supposed to finish the project tomorrow. Next Friday, I have a practical exam on it, in which I have to make another one in about four hours.

My other classes are Biochemistry, Physiology, and Experiential Learning (in which we work through sample cases in small groups). Another few classes are scheduled to start mid-semester. Thus far, I am enjoying the classes; they are interesting.

  5. Haha--I'm sure Josh is plenty old enough for coffee, I was just teasing. :) I like his taste, actually. Mint and caramel, yum.

I'm curious, are you making teeth sculptures just to help cement teeth anatomy in your brain? You won't have to hand make teeth once you become a dentist, will you?

I have to say that Experimental Learning sounds like the most interesting class out of that list.

  7. My tooth waxing appears to be speeding up; I completed my second tooth to within passing-grade range in about five hours. The main reason we're making them is to practice for when we have to do fillings and make crowns later. We'll be hand-making most of those, so it is important that we know how to make the right shapes quickly.

Experimental Learning is fun. We're working on an Ethics sub-course in it now. We spent the last class period in small groups discussing how we would respond to ethically challenging hypothetical situations. For example, what if we accidentally pull the wrong tooth, and our supervisor tries to cover the situation up...do we tell the patient, and if so, how? Or what if we accidentally inform a mom that her 34-year-old daughter is expecting, when the daughter might not have wanted her to know? We've just accidentally violated the confidentiality of our patient's information...what do we do now? The American Dental Association condenses ethics down to five core principles, so we had to defend our chosen course of action on the basis of those principles. It was an enjoyable set of conversations.

  8. Yay for passing! :) Are you saying your practicing for when you do crowns and fillings later on in school or later on after school?

Wow! Those are tough questions! I mean, if you pull the wrong tooth you made a mistake and should own up to it, of course. How to go about making things right is the tough part. Hopefully you have a forgiving patient!
Mind if I ask what course of action you would take in the second example?
